I don't know about you, but I get excited about solstices. Today, the sun rose at 7:16 a.m. and will set at 4:31 p.m. This is the shortest day and longest night of the year. After today, there will be a little bit more daylight each day.
As I drove south on Ocean Parkway I glimpsed a big orange sun getting ready to set. It had dropped into the sea by the time I got to Coney Island but I was able to photograph the "aftermath".
Don't forget to visit Nathan's for a hot dog in the "off" season. I love to drop by on a cold winter day for a bowl of hot chicken soup. My favorite is fish 'n chips. Hope to see you there.
Deno's Wonder Wheel Park will now be closed until next Spring. It's such a family friendly place, so colorful, so much fun. Hopefully, the property next door formerly known as Astroland (then "Dreamland") will be developed into an equally enjoyable and affordable amusement park. The spirit of Coney lives and cannot be destroyed!
If you haven't had an opportunity to visit Deno's Wonder Wheel Park this season, take advantage of this holiday weekend to enjoy it. Otherwise you'll be waiting until next Spring.
I happened upon this carving of a mermaid in the sand. Not pictured is an adjacent carving of another creature I can only describe as part human, part horse. A bystander informed me that he had observed the artist(s) at work, they are art students and this was a homework assignment! You see the most amazing things at Coney Island.
Heavy fog enveloped the beaches at Coney Island for about an hour, I thought I was at the edge of the world. The ocean had disappeared! I took this shot as the fog began to lift.
Brooklyn Streetcar Artists' Group in collaboration with Coney Island Hospital presents "A Celebration of the Arts", an exhibition of local artists. Exhibit ongoing through Thanksgiving, Monday-Friday, 9 AM-6PM. Opening reception Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 6:30-9:00 PM. Coney Island Hospital, 2601 Ocean Parkway, Main Building, 2nd Floor.
I took this photo from Gateway National Park's Fort Tilden Unit on Rockaway, looking toward Brooklyn and the Gil Hodges Marine Park Memorial Bridge. I thought of our late friend, Bob Guskind, with his fantastic Street Couch series on http://www.gowanuslounge.com R.I.P., Bob, we miss you greatly. Thanks always for your inspiration!
Sorry, no photo of Carlos Beltran, who hit game winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning. But I hope you enjoy the picture of yours truly with Pee Wee and Sandy the Seagull.
Last day of August, always makes me feel a bit sad. Summer's winding down. But my mood improved as I photographed the glorious clouds. September will bring more of the same.
Swimming was prohibited at Coney Island today due to an impending tropical storm, but at least one homeless person sought rest and refuge on the beach. There is alot of poverty, homelessness and drug addiction as well as violent gang activity in the neighborhood. On the plus side, there are community gardeners, church members and other concerned citizens/outreach groups doing their best to help overcome these serious problems.
Yesterday I found this arrangement near the jetty at Bay 20, Coney Island. Various fruits, candle, flowers, incense. Does anyone have any insight into this kind of "offering"?
I strolled through the "new" Dreamland, site of the former Astroland. I met brothers Ryan who runs the Mini Ferris Wheel, and Eddie, in charge of The Banana. Lots of other new rides and attractions!
I am grateful to be a member of the Surfside Community Garden, Surf Avenue at West 29th Street. Growing tomatoes for the first time in my life! My friends at the garden are doing a wonderful job helping young people in the neighborhood get involved in gardening.
Lifeguards have been getting a bad rap lately, but most of them are doing a great job. People can save their own lives by swimming only where lifeguards are on duty.
Astroland is gone, who knows what's going to transpire, will I live long enough to see the "new" Coney Island. Meanwhile, I really enjoy Deno's Wonder Wheel Park.
